At the very beginning of 2014 I decided to start to track my reading habits and share the best stuff here, on Baeldung.

Baeldung

Curating my reading has made it more purposeful and diverse – and I’m hopefully providing value to you as well by allowing the best content of the week to raise to the top.

Here we go…

1. Java and Spring

1.Java和Spring

>> Preventing lost updates in long conversations

An interesting and very useful deep-dive into how and where to implement your transaction orchestration logic.

>> JUnit in a Nutshell: Yet Another JUnit Tutorial

A 6-parter that goes beyond the basics of JUnit. I’ve been covering the individual articles in my weekly reviews – here’s the whole thing.

>> Setup Spring Security with Active Directory LDAP in Spring Boot Web Application

Spring Boot makes so many usecases and configurations in Spring simpler – this is just one of many.

And finally – Spring Boot 1.1.7 was released this week.

2. Technical

>> The value proposition of Hypermedia

I’ve read many articles explaining Hypermedia and the RESTful HATEOAS constraint – and there’s usually something missing. This one strikes a good balance between not just explaining what HATEOAS is, but actually how and why it’s useful in practice – not just as a theoretical concept. Entirely recommended reading if you’re working on an API (or have any plans to).

>> Chess TDD 16: Finishing Bishop Blocking

I incorrectly though this great series had wrapped up a few weeks back. It’s not – and I have some caching up to do. Regardless, it’s one of the best resources to really dig deep into TDD on a non-trivial project – so if you haven’t done so already – get clickin’ and start with episode 1.

3. Musings

>> Opening Word is Software Development Fail

An interesting take on documenting process vs automation. Read this one not for a black and white view but more in terms of a tool to help you think though what you really need to document and what you should just spend the extra effort to automate.

>> What annoys us defines us

Quick but insightful reading on maybe reconsidering how you look at the things that annoy you.

4. Comics

4.漫画

Let’s finish up with one of the well-known XKCD series out there – this one is a 5 parter:

>> Journal

>> Journal 2

>> Journal 3

>> Journal 4

>> Journal 5

5. Pick of the Week

Last week I introduced the “Pick of the Week” section here in my “Weekly Review”. The interesting part is that it’s entirely exclusive to my email list subscribers.

So – if you came to this article from my email list, you have the pick already – hope you enjoyed it 🙂 If not – you can of course subscribe to the list to get the next one.

There you go – compared to last weeks behemoth, this one was light and to the point.

Until next week.
